Why Lilith?

People ask me all the time why I chose the name Lilith Paper Company.
It is a fair question. After all, names matter. Especially when you are building a company around words! The funny thing is Lilith wasn’t actually my first choice. I had lists. Pages of them. Some names were practical. Some clever. Some beautiful. None of them felt like home.
Then one afternoon I found myself flipping through the new shows and was reminded of my very first concert: Lilith Fair and the name echoed in my mind.
There are many stories surrounding the name Lilith. Some traditions describe Lilith as Adam’s first wife. Some describe her as a myth. Some see her as a cautionary tale. Others see her as a woman who simply refused to surrender who she was.
Whether you read the story through history, literature, folklore, or faith, one thing has always fascinated me: People have been arguing about Lilith for thousands of years. Not because everyone agrees on who she was. Because everyone agrees she was impossible to ignore. That felt strangely familiar.
The Women Who Raised Me
Truthfully, the name wasn’t born from mythology. It was born from the women in my life. My mom is one of the strongest people I've ever known. When my dad died, she raised four children on her own without ever letting us question whether we were loved. Not once. She worked. She laughed. She carried burdens she made sure we never saw and somehow she made life sparkle.
Then there was my grandmother. Upon retirement, instead of slowing down, she started a business. She traveled. She got a tattoo long before grandmothers were "supposed" to. A plumeria. That flower eventually became part of our logo because every time I see one, I think about family, resilience, and choosing joy.
Those women taught me something I didn't fully understand until much later. Strength isn't loud. It doesn't always win awards.
Sometimes it simply gets up the next morning and keeps loving people.
Building Instead of Waiting
For most of my life, I believed success was something someone else handed you. Work hard. Wait your turn. Earn permission. Apply again. Maybe this time (crossing fingers & toes).
There is dignity in hard work. I still believe that. But somewhere along the way I realized I was waiting for someone else to decide whether my ideas were valuable enough. Whether I deserved a seat at the table. (How many of us stay afloat in this pondering for too long?)
One day I asked myself a different question: What if I build my own table?
Not because I wanted to prove anyone wrong, but because I wanted my children to see they never have to wait for permission to create something meaningful.
Lilith Paper Company became that decision. Not rebellion for rebellion’s sake. The quiet kind. The kind that says, “I think this work matters.” and “I’m going to do it.”
Why a Greeting Card Company?
Because human connection matters. Because w o r d s matter.
Because somewhere along the way we started treating meaningful conversations like they should only happen on birthdays and holidays. We disagree.
The best relationships do not need an occasion, they make them. Every card we create asks one question, “Will this help two people feel more connected?” If the answer is yes.. We are headed in the right direction.
Bigger than Cards
One day, I hope Lilith becomes more than a greeting card company. I hope it helps create scholarships for young artists and writers. For creative people who simply need someone to believe in what they are building. Because creativity changes communities. Sometimes all it needs is one person willing to say, “Keep going.”
So… Why Lilith?
Because names carry stories. For me, Lilith represents courage. Authenticity. Choosing your own path. Speaking honestly. Building instead of waiting. Creating instead of complaining.
Loving people loudly. That’s the company we are trying to build. And if our cards help someone laugh through grief… reconnect with a friend… apologize… celebrate an ordinary Tuesday… or simply remind another human being they are not alone… then the name has done exactly what we hoped it would.
